What is GEO, and how do you get cited by AI answers?

AI assistants now answer questions your customers used to Google. Here is how they choose which businesses to name, and what you can do about it.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • AI assistants answer with a short list of businesses, not ten links.
  • They favor sources that are consistent, clear and confirmed by other sites.
  • Most of what helps you rank also helps you get cited.
  • Measure it by running the same questions on a schedule.

For years, getting found online meant ranking on Google. That is still true, but it is no longer the whole story. More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews the same questions they used to type into a search bar, and they get a written answer instead of ten blue links.

That answer usually names a few businesses. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making yours one of them.

What changed

A search results page shows options and lets the person choose. An AI answer makes the choice for them, or at least narrows it to two or three names.

An AI answer makes the choice for your customer. If you are not one of the names, you may never get considered.

The good news: AI tools are not picking at random. They draw on the same web your customers use, and they favor sources that are clear, consistent and well regarded.

An AI answer usually names a short list of businesses and cites where it got them.

How AI picks its sources

No one outside these companies knows every detail, and the systems change often. But a few patterns hold up across tools:

  • Consistent facts. Your business name, address, phone, hours and services should match everywhere they appear.
  • Direct answers. Pages that answer a specific question in plain language are easier to quote than pages written to sell.
  • Structured data. Schema markup tells machines what your business is, what you offer and what customers say.
  • Agreement from other sites. Reviews, directories, local press and industry sites that describe you the same way.

A checklist for this month

  1. Ask three AI assistants about your category and city. Write down who they name and which sources they cite.
  2. Fix any mismatched business details on Google, Apple Maps, Bing and the major directories.
  3. Add an FAQ section to your key service pages, with short, direct answers.
  4. Add or repair schema for your business, services, reviews and FAQs.
  5. Ask recent happy customers for reviews that mention the service they used.

GEO vs SEO

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. Most of what helps a page rank, like fast load times, clear structure and real authority, also helps it get cited. The difference is the goal: SEO aims to rank a page, while GEO aims to get your business named inside an answer.

That is why the two work well together: the same audit often finds problems that hurt both.

How to measure it

There is no single dashboard for AI visibility yet. The most reliable method is simple: pick a fixed set of questions your customers ask, run them across the major assistants on a schedule, and track how often you are named and who appears alongside you.

Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed AI recommendation. Nobody controls these tools. What you can control is how clear, consistent and credible your business looks to them.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. Fast, well-structured, trusted sites tend to do well in both.

Which AI tools matter most?

For most businesses, ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity are the main AI tools most businesses need to check.

Can anyone guarantee an AI recommendation?

No. These tools change often and nobody controls them. You can improve the signals they rely on and track the results.
